Electrification of Sydney and Suburban Railways
The Genesis of the Sydney Electric Railway System
This book contains six technical papers which outline the design considerations
and original equipment used for the electrification of Sydney's suburban railways
in 1926. The authors are the then Chief Railway Commissioner, James Fraser and
five senior railway engineers (with their staff) including Dr J.J.C Bradfield.
The papers were written for presentation for the Institution of Engineers
Australia in 1926 and are fully illustrated with numerous drawings and
photographs.
This book is a facsimile reproduction of the original papers and is divided into
six chapters titled:-
The railway system, past, present and projected of the City of Sydney and its
suburbs, by James Fraser.
Track and construction work, by Robert Rankin.
The signalling system, by Cyril Byles.
Electric rollingstock equipments, maintenance workshops and inspection depots,
by Ernest Lucy.
Power supply and distribution by Harold Myers
The City Railway by John Bradfield.
This book is one of the definitive technical references on the original
electrified Sydney system. Although the technology has advanced, many of the
fundamental principles and issues outlined in these papers are still relevant
today. It is thus highly recommended for those with a technical interest in
railways, and particularly electric traction.
