Electric Locomotive 8607 is currently stored at Broken Hill in Far West NSW and it is required to move
from there to a new storage location.
Sydney Electric Train Society Inc. has been given the task of making the arrangements for the movement
of the locomotive and planning is currently underway on this enormous task.
The owner of 8607 is SETS member John Horne, who has worked tirelessly in the background assisting SETS
to preserve examples of Sydneys Red sets, U sets, Tulloch trailers, Electric Locomotives as well as our
large collection of spare parts, with very little acknowledgement or display of appreciation.
As a way of showing our appreciation to John for all of his effort in making SETS what it is today, we
propose to assist him to keep the enormous cost of inspection, preparation and transfer of the locomotive
to a minimum, by operating a special tour to pick up 8607 from Broken Hill.
Organising such a tour is a huge task in itself that we have never tried to do before now, and to assist
us to make sure we will be able to achieve the task of running such a tour, we would like to establish
how much interest there will be from SETS members and members of public alike in attending the proposed
tour.
The proposed tour would include return rail travel to Broken Hill with two nights accommodation, a day
trip on day two to SteamTown Rail Heritage Centre in Peterborough S.A (280 km from Broken Hill) followed
by a sunset visit to historic Silverton (26km from Broken Hill). There is a possibility of a third
overnight stay in Parkes on the return journey.
Sydney Electric Train Society Inc. is NOT aiming to make any profit from this tour. We are simply aiming
to complete the task of moving 8607 and, at the same time, provide an opportunity for members and guests
to enjoy a tour with a difference to places of interest, that are not easily accessible
For those who wish to travel with us, we will be charging a flat fee of between $1000 and $1200 per head,
to cover all costs involved including accommodation, travel and some meals.
If you wish to travel with us on this proposed tour, please make yourself known to the committee by
filling out the attached form OR sending an email to: sydneyelectrictrainsociety@gmail.com
You do NOT have to be a member of SETS to travel on this tour. Members of the public are most welcome!
