THE DETAILS:
Lithgows past & present railway scene is the feature of this tour. We will be given a guided tour of Lithgow Maintenance Centre, and also explore various aspects of Lithgows bygone railway history.
We will travel to Lithgow on the 8:02am intercity service from Central, arriving at Lithgow at 10:45am for our inspection of the Maintenance Centre. This will be a rare opportunity to see a number of stored electric locomotives on-site, as well as various other active units in between duties. Following a half-hour lunch-break, we will then commence the bus tour of Lithgows past railway scene, with our bus chartered from Jones Bros.
At the peak of its industrial history, Lithgow was a maze of railway branches and sidings, now long gone. Many of these lines served the steelworks as well as the many collieries and other industries that once thrived in the township. This tour will revisit some of these locations, especially Oakey Park, State Mine Gully, Vale of Clywdd, Hermitage Colliery and Pottery Estate. Our guide for this portion of the tour will be Alan Cargill, who is an authority on Lithgows railway history. A map of the former Lithgow railway network and notes will be distributed to all patrons. This is a rare opportunity to explore the old railway locations around Lithgow with authoritative commentary and guidance. An article on the historical aspect of this tour appeared in the September 2000 issue of the ARHS Bulletin.
Our return to Sydney will be on the 3:39pm intercity service from Lithgow, arriving at Central at 6:23pm. Please note that leather footwear is required for Lithgow Maintenance Centre (no sneakers, sandals or thongs).
THE FARES ARE:
Adults $40, Concessions $25 and Children (16-18 years) $20. This all-inclusive fare includes return travel to Lithgow on the intercity service, and chartered bus travel around Lithgow on the day. It is highly recommended that you join our tour at Central, as this will assist us greatly in booking your passage on the intercity service on your behalf.
A Booking Form is available to print out and mail with your payment.
